Day Seventynine


Feeling overjoyed because of catching this bulbul. Now I have to go after the fantail. It hardly stays still. I saw it hustiling a crow today. Birdwatching from inside my home has been such a revelation during this lockdown. 

I am happy that my college has decided to conduct exams and not pass the students automatically as decided by the state government. 75% weightage will be given to the mid-semsester and continuous assessment scores. This is a welcome fall out of the pandemic. The state government's decision is attracting lot of flak from various quarters. There are fears that the "corona graduates" may face much hurdles in their career and may even be derecognised by various professional councils. 

 We had been told that asymptomatic people could still be carriers of the virus. But the technical head of WHO dropped a bombshell yesterday by declaring that asymptomatic transmission appears "very rare".

Thoughts on the Pandemic

As we enter the last week of an extraordinary year, I hasten to put down my thoughts buzzing in my head, lest they become mere nostalgia. At the beginning of the year, all I wanted to do was travel. 2020 was supposed to my year of big travel. Angkor Vat was scheduled for February. World's First Vaccine?

Russia appears have won the vaccine race. Putin says his own daughter has been inoculated with the vaccine that has been codenamed Sputnik V . But many experts are sceptical and are expressing concerns about the lack of transparency. Russians say 20 countries have shown interest in the vaccine and that commercial production will begin next month. The vaccine has been developed by Gamaleya Research Institute in collaboration with the Defence Ministry. Meanwhile Phase 3 trials of the Oxford Vaccine will begin soon at 17 sites in India.

Distance learning, especially for higher education, has to look beyond technology platforms like Zoom. There are many cost-effective models of delivering learning modules to students. These can not only expand the student population, but also allow them to learn and be tested at their own pace.
