Day Ninetyeight

While researching for my column I came across this beautiful line - It is important to to try to show a little less judgement about how others are acting and a bit more compassion for their circumstances, some of which we may not understand. This sort of changed the tenor of my writing. I was writing about the spate of accidents that have rocked the chemical industry, as the plants were restarting after several weeks of lockdown. There are many things competing for our attention during these challenging times. Some people may be worried about their jobs and livelihood. Others may be concerned about the safety of their near and dear ones. Can a stressed mind bring the full focus and attention required for the complex task of starting up a chemical plant? Companies in Europe are implementing wellbeing programmes for its employees and these will also address their mental health. Our mental health can also be impaired because of social isolation and loeliness.

Day Sixteen

Hydroxychloroquine is the word of the day, after Trump yesterday threatened to retaliate if India does not lift export embargo on the anti malarial drug. Trump has been promoting the drug as a game changer in his pressers. America is now hoarding the drug and genuine users are finding it hard to come by for their Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. For once, we are making something more than China. We are the largest producer of Hydroxychloroquine in the world with a 70% share. Zydus Cadilla, IPCA Laboratories and Cipla are the leading manufacturers. Stocks worth garnering. Meanwhile the famous film maker of Japan, Fuji is testing the drug Favipiravir discovered in 1998.  With number of cases crossing 1000, Mumbai is becoming the New York of India, the hottest of hotspots. I cannot imagine the lockdown being lifted in Mumbai next week.  Boris Johnson is in ICU. And Britain does not have a formal hierarchy.

Distance learning, especially for higher education, has to look beyond technology platforms like Zoom. There are many cost-effective models of delivering learning modules to students. These can not only expand the student population, but also allow them to learn and be tested at their own pace. Finally, we a great opportunity to break free from the tyranny of classrooms and oppressive examinations.  Pictures like these of men in Hazmat suits disinfecting public places have been common in media.
